Club Formation Night
Thanet Lions Cub were very proud recently to have
launched a new school based Leos club; the first within the district
for over 10 years. More than 60 people representing Lions from
clubs within the district, parents and the local Mayor of Margate
came to support the new members who are students of King Ethelbert
School in Birchington near Margate. At the induction ceremony,
all the Leo members were presented with their membership badges
and certificates by Thanet Lions Club President Steve Walden and
the newly inducted Leo President Rachael assisted by Vice President
Alice Hester.
Chairman of Council Chris Iles also attended along with District
Governor Elect Robin Blake and Chris presented our Leo Club President
Rachael Hammond with the Certificate of Organisation.
During the evening parents and invited guests found out about
projects Lions and Leos Clubs get involved in and they heard what
projects the young people have done so far and hope to do. So far
the Leos have organized raffles and bag packing events at local
supermarkets and have collected toiletries which were presented
to the Red Cross Emergency support co-ordinator which will be kept
on board their vehicle for victims involved in major fires.
Many clubs in the district are now asking Steve Carley the club’s
Leo adviser and teacher at the school, to go and talk to them about
how to set up a school based Leos Club, especially as GCSE Citizenship
is a National Curriculum subject and organising a charity project
is part of the coursework, so schools having a Leos club will help
them achieve this. If any other clubs would like to find out more
information they can contact Steve at stevecarley@kingethelbert.kent.sch.uk.
